Text Box: The Creative Process

When asked about the creative process, Duvoisin always quoted Constantin Brancusi, the Rumanian sculptor.

“There’s a child in every adult, and when that child dies, it’s a death for the adult too. So I do these books for my own pleasure as much as for the children’s pleasure. LouLou and I write for the children we were”

Tidbits

A Little Boy Was Drawing, Duvoisin’s first book was published in 1932 when he was 28 years old. It didn’t receive much attention, but a Scribner editor suggested he continue along this path and Donkey, Donkey published in 1933 was wildly successful. Suddenly his lifetime career was in full motion. Donkey, Donkey went on to sell over a million copies and is still being reprinted and sold today.

In 1950, Duvoisin and his wife, Louise (LouLou) Fatio began a collaboration that lasted for 30 years. She wrote the stories and he illustrated them.  In all they created 15 books, among them the beloved Happy Lion series.
